1.
Ancient Gishbanda is set into the mountain A trap On a cliff-clinging path At the doors of the life-giving sun At its dark shrine Frightening and red Ningishzida watches open-handed His black hair falling across his back A net of eyes and taut muscle A foot-shackling netherworld knot
2.
Dream-Opener 05:09
The wild cow of the Sirara shrine Rises into the future Adorned Jeweled dream-opener Born in the darkened sea-foam, Playing in gleaming waves
3.
A jeweled bed Heart-soothing Strewn with herbs The burnished bricks of Badtibira Rise shining over the steppe Where the shepherd protects his sheep from pacing lions Beaten copper Radiant in the morning light
4.
The temple at Zabalam Swathed in shimmering beams A sanctuary of wakening desire spread wide Resounding In her hallowed chamber A woman at twilight Moving among the bright things All her own
5.
On the green hill of the temple at Lagash Women pour wine into fine stone vessels under the sky Unequaled Unceasing A radiant fire, fate-cutting A field-flattening blade A drenching, destroying blast A wind A battle storm spawned from a glance Whirlpools spin in its river Whirlwinds pour through its gate
6.
Ninhursag’s Temple coils on the mountain The lady’s house built on an imposing cliff Inside, a womb, deep, fixed in place by incantation From here all form is birthed, In a deep darkness Untouched by moonlight Open-mouthed fear like a great poisonous snake Towering over the world, In roaring silence.
7.
The starry temple at Eresh welcomes all directions People lift their heads to hear the wisest women Read from cool blue tablets Born of sharpened reeds Measuring the earth and the sky Their knowledge moves into the world Enheduanna bound this tablet together Something never before created

about

Guitar, hand drums, pill bottle, a couple of sticks I found in the garage, and voice. Texts are adapted from a selection of temple hymns traditionally attributed to Enheduanna, Priestess of Inanna, who lived in the Sumerian city-state of Ur, over four thousand years ago.

With thanks to Langley Hyde, who kindly narrated.

(I think this one sounds best at moderate volume: conversational level.)

about

Michael Bell Bellingham, Washington

A Loose-Fish and a Fast-Fish, too.

Some of this is music for video games. The rest is a fairly raw document of my ongoing attempt to find something new among the blinking lights in my studio at home.
